Affymetrix offers high-density microarrays, referred to as GeneChips®. Sets of 25-mer oligonucloetide probes are synthesized directly on quartz wafers, which are later assembled into GeneChip® cartridges. The probes are designed to determine whether the complementary sequence is present in the DNA or RNA sample. Pairs of perfect match and mismatch probes are often used to identify nonspecific hybridization. Each expression or genotype measurement is based on the results from a collection of different probes representing the same gene. This probe set design provides multiple, independent measurements of the same target.
