Feature-RNA-Seq |

RNA-Seq (also known as =
transcriptome=20
sequencing) potentially allows profiling the whole =
population of=20
mRNA species and potentially enables mapping and =
quantification of=20
all transcripts. It can also provide information on=20
alternative splice sites, novel transcripts, previously =
unknown=20
isoforms, rare transcripts and cSNPs.
Transcriptome studies are a =
cornerstone=20
of functional genomics and provide insight into which genes =
are=20
expressed in specific circumstances, tissue-specific =
expression=20
patterns, organismal and strain variation in expression =
patterns and=20
differential expression in disease conditions. In contrast =
to=20
microarray-based analyses, RNA-Seq does not rely upon a=20
predetermined set of probe sequences.
Advantages:
More versatile and comprehensive than microarrays, =
with=20
superior reproducibility-- Direct sequence information =
makes=20
possible comparisons between transcript isoforms-- Open =
platform that does not depend on any prior definition of =
transcripts=20
to be measured. (a reference genome sequence is required)-- =
Provides=20
information about potentially all mRNA=E2=80=99s within the =
sample and=20
allows for the discovery of novel mRNA=E2=80=99s-- High =
sensitivity=20
facilitates the detection and small changes in mRNA =
abundance=20
between samples.

EA will once again host its =E2=80=9CLeave Your =
Fingerprint on the Cure=E2=80=9D=20
campaign at the upcoming American=
=20
Society of Human Genetics 61st Annual Meeting. The event =
is=20
scheduled for October 12th in conjunction with the meeting =
to be=20
held in Montreal. The money raised will benefit the =
cancer and=20
genetics program at The Montreal Children=E2=80=99s =
Hospital. This=20
program is an area of excellence at the hospital which =
allows=20
researchers to become better able to precisely diagnose =
childhood=20
diseases, predict their course, and create more effective =
treatments=20
with fewer side effects.
The campaign was started in 2008 at the ASHG 58th annual =
meeting;=20
the donation for each individual that participated was =
$10.00. =20
This year, because of additional corporate sponsors the =
amount has=20
risen to over $100.00 per participant. This year =
QIAGEN and=20
Nugen was added to the growing list of sponsors =E2=80=93 =
Affymetrix,=20
Agilent Technologies, Fluidigm, Illumina, Pacific =
Biosciences and=20
RainDance Technologies.
This campaign has become an important part of who EA is =
=E2=80=93 a=20
company dedicated to providing industry-leading tools and =
services=20
that help accelerate the pace of genetic research. If =
you are=20
attending ASHG stop by booth #617 and participate in this =
very dear=20
to our hearts campaign.
