Expression Analysis lands $1.5M EPA deal
June 3, 2003
Sabine Vollmer
Expression Analysis, a microarray genetics testing and analysis company that spun out of Duke University in September 2001, has received a three-year contract from the Environmental Protection Agency worth up to $1.5 million, or about as much as the startup's first-year revenue.
To fulfill the EPA contract, Expression Analysis will run gene expression analyses. But the EPA has not disclosed how it will use the results of the tests, says Steve Casey, the company's co-founder and chief operating officer.
Since its inception, Expression Analysis has grown to 13 employees and assembled a client list of 72. Entrepreneur magazine, in its June issue, ranks the company 88th among its 100 fastest growing startups in the United States.
Casey attributed the company's fast paced start to turning a Master of Business Administration homework assignment and a highly marketable idea into reality through a committed focus on quality and customer service.
Expression Analysis was co-founded by Casey and Don Holzworth, chief executive officer of Durham-based Constella Group, with a $1.2 million investment.
