Expression Analysis Listed in Entrepreneur Magazine's 9th Annual Hot 100 Fastest-Growing Entrepreneurial Companies in America
DURHAM, N.C., June 4, 2003-Expression Analysis, Inc., a Durham-based microarray genetics testing and analysis company with a sizzling success story, has been named one of the top 100 fastest-growing new entrepreneurial companies in America in the June 2003 issue of Entrepreneur magazine. It is one of only three companies in North Carolina on this year's national list.
Expression Analysis (EA) was founded in September 2001 with two employees and a $1.2 million initial investment. Today, with a staff of 13 and $1.8 million in sales in 2002, Expression Analysis is number 88 on Entrepreneur's Hot 100 list (www.entrepreneur.com/hot100).
The company was co-founded by Steve Casey, its chief operating officer, and Donald A. Holzworth, chairman of the board of EA and the CEO of Constella Group, Inc. Constella (formerly named Analytical Sciences, Inc., or ASI) has been incubating EA out of its Durham headquarters since day one.
Casey attributes EA's fast-paced start to turning an MBA homework assignment and a highly marketable idea into reality through a committed focus on quality and customer service.
"The idea of providing microarray processing was not new, but how we executed it was novel," said Casey. "We positioned Expression Analysis to be a true 'service' provider, not just a process provider. We have staffed EA with highly skilled, highly talented Ph.D.s in molecular biology and statistics so we can truly serve the research community. Whether you are a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical or a single researcher with a novel compound, you will receive the same Ph.D.-level support from experimental design through processing to custom data analysis. Our comprehensive service offerings allow clients to gain a deeper understanding of their microarray results quicker, with more biological meaning than if we were to just send them back raw data."
Holzworth also emphasized the start-up's customer service philosophy as a key market differentiator.
"We built EA from the customers' perspective right out of the gate, actually launching a marketing initiative before we identified our technical staff. We wanted to create an organization that had an eye on meeting and exceeding its customers' needs. Microarray technology is gaining tremendous momentum through the entire discovery phase. By helping our clients benefit from this technology better and quicker, we believe that better drugs will hit the shelves sooner at a more reasonable price. That is more important to us than getting maximum gross margins. By not skimping on costs and talent, we have been able to achieve an incredibly high repeat customer rate."
EA has more than 70 international customers in the microarray genetics testing market. Among its key clients are Schering-Plough Corp., Repligen Corp., ISU Chemical and Duke University. The company is projected to achieve $4 million in revenue in 2003 with continued infrastructure support from Constella Group.
The 9th Annual Hot 100 listing of fast-growing new businesses was compiled with assistance from D&B, the leading provider of global business information and technology solutions. Entrepreneur collected information and financial statements from up-and-coming entrepreneurial companies in D&B's massive database. Then, Entrepreneur measured each company's sales growth from the date of inception, listing the businesses in growth order.
Each company that was considered for Entrepreneur's Hot 100 list was founded no earlier that 1998, had more than $1 million in annual sales for 2002, and has a founder who is actively involved in daily operations and has a controlling interest in the business. A complete story and listing can be found in the June 2003 issue of Entrepreneur magazine, now available on newsstands.
For more than 25 years, Entrepreneur magazine has been the leading authority dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs worldwide to start and grow successful companies. More than two million readers turn to Entrepreneur every month (MRI 2002 Doublebase) for cutting-edge ideas to help them grow and improve their businesses.
