Expression Analysis and Duke University Medical Center Renew and Expand Collaborative Services Agreement

Durham, N.C. (June 2, 2004 ) — Expression Analysis, Inc., (EA) the leading provider of commercial microarray services using the Affymetrix platform, today announced the renewal and extension of its collaborative services agreement with Duke University Medical Center .

Through this agreement, Duke has committed to using EA as its primary service provider for Affymetrix GeneChip® processing for the next three years, with options to renew in years four and five. EA will continue to provide target probe development, hybridization, and processing of RNA samples and Affymetrix products for Duke.

"This continued commitment by Duke validates and solidifies our relationship with one of the nation's top universities and our very first customer," said Steven Casey, EA's chief operating officer. "Microarray technologies are rapidly expanding in discovery and development for both pharmaceutical and diagnostic applications. As Duke University focuses on resource utilization, our high-quality central laboratory provides a solution allowing Duke to advance its medical research.”

Since its initial agreement with Duke in 2001, EA's service offerings have expanded to include RNA isolation from tissue or cells and small sample amplification. Its services will soon expand to include paraffin-embedded tissue isolation and genotyping.

“By outsourcing our gene-expression to EA we have been able to devote more time and resources on the development of a bioinformatics and analysis infrastructure as an additional resource for Duke investigators,” said Holly Dressman, Ph.D., director of the Microarray Facility at Duke University Medical Center, who oversees the collaboration between Duke and the EA Institute, a division of EA set up exclusively for Duke.

“EA's expertise, commitment to quality and reliability has resulted in the production of reproducible and high-quality data,” she added. “They incorporate quality control measurements, rapid turn around time and excellent technical advice. Using EA, we have also been able to expand development of other technologies for gene expression analysis.”

EA quickly took a leadership role among the few U.S.-based authorized service providers for Affymetrix ( http://www.affymetrix.com ), a California-based company that develops and commercializes systems to help researchers explore the relationship between genes and human health. With a client base of more than 120 researchers worldwide, a just concluded collaboration with the FDA, a position on the RNA Standards Committee and becoming the first microarray provider capable of operating under the guidelines of GLP, EA has elevated itself as the premier microarray outsource provider.
