Proficiency Testing

Expression Analysis has developed the first Proficiency Testing program for microarray assays. In 2004, the program performed three rounds of testing using rat samples. In 2007, the program initiated testing using human RNA samples developed as part of the Microarray Quality Control (MAQC) project initiated by the FDA.

During each round of testing, Expression Analysis distributes identical RNA samples to multiple laboratories. Each laboratory processes the samples using their unique protocols and returns CEL files to Expression Analysis for detailed review. The data sets are analyzed using a number of quality, sensitivity, reproducibility and comparability metrics. Initial findings indicate that similar biological results can be identified in replicate microarray data sets generated in different labs or in the same lab at different times.

These results are proving to be highly encouraging as microarrays transition toward clinical diagnostic applications, which will require repeated proficiency tests. They also help establish quality review procedures that assist in establishing microarray standards and may be required when submitting data for regulatory review.
